Giulio D'Ercole Humanitarian and Development Projects Photographer: In 2007 I was in South Sudan, not too far from Juba, at the border with Kenya, working for the Dutch NGO SNV. My assignment was to document the NGOs projects implemented with the Toposa community living in Kapoeta at around it. The projects were mainly about governance, education, production of Arabic gum. and conflict resolution. Of the latter in fact there was and still is a huge need, since the Toposa tribe are in constant conflict with the Turkanas and the Pokots of Kenya, because of mutual cattle rustling. During the daily trips to visit the different locations where the projects were implemented, I took the chance to shoot a number of photos of this amazingly beautiful tribe, living, at that time still away from the upcoming "development", and at the same time still suffering from the inevitable prolonged and deep consequences of a national conflict that, like in Somalia, seems to have no end. The shots I took then, and here proposed in a small selection, were of children willing to learn, proud men, and of strong women, whose beauty was not shadowed by the cultural scarification but maybe even enhanced by it.
