Giulio D'Ercole - Canvas Africa Productions
Photojournalist and Documentary Director Producer
"The Face of African Dignity" has been my first exhibition as a photographer. It was hosted by the Italian Institute of Culture in Nairobi, in 2007. After having already traveled in most Eastern African countries, and after having understood that the images of Africa, portrayed in other exhibitions, magazines or news, were always focusing, apart from very few cases, either on human suffering or on captivating wildlife, I felt the urge of sharing with others my own experience and fascination with Africa: the beauty, the dignity, the joy, the pride of those people I met along my trips. All the portraits of men, women and children of "The Face of African Dignity", in fact, never indulge in the stereotypical mental, colonial and post colonial image of kids with flies in the eyes, HIV dying adults, or exploited women. The portraits of my exhibition showed another image of Kenyans, Tanzanians, Somalis, the one related to resilience, will, harmony, cultural identity, strength and happiness. All values that most of the times a western cultural attitude, more or less subtly, deprived Africans of.
