Giulio D'Ercole - Canvas Africa Productions
Photojournalist and Documentary Director Producer
"Canvas Africa and its team of professionals were hired to produce a short documentary that captured the impact of the Great Lakes Advocacy Initiative (GLAI) in four countries in East and Central Africa. In close collaboration with the GLAI coordination, the team was able to capture key messages on each country's journey in addressing gender-based violence and increasing public awareness. With guidance from CARE Norway and direct input from country-based GLAI staff and partners, the team was able to pull together compelling images and produce a tight narrative that ultimately represented the complexity of the initiative in an efficient and inspiring film, which is being used on the field to mobilize communities and stakeholders. GLAI is an ongoing initiative that merits quality documentation and visibility. Canvas Africa Communications demonstrated its ability to work under difficult conditions and with tight schedules, and to bring to life extraordinary stories of resilience and determination."
I had the pleasure to work with Canvas Africa on several video projects for CARE International in 2006 and 2007. I was very pleased with the final product and with Canvas Africa’s way of working. Their team related well to our staff on the ground, mobilized support for the project and, most importantly, was able to capture and to convey our work through compelling images and narrative. The video project was particularly challenging, as it had to convey a process rather than an actual event or intervention. Canvas Africa managed to creatively bring the story to life, tying together powerful sound bites to riveting images collected in Burundi, Tanzania and Ethiopia. I am certain that this 30-minute film is going to be thoroughly used within CARE and beyond. If you believe in the power of communication to bring about social change, I highly recommend Canvas Africa as a production partner.
Beatrice M. Spadacini
Former Media and Communications Manager East and Central Africa
“Canvas Africa produces quality work. They are involved in every process of production and demonstrate a genuine interest in the issue being presented on film. I appreciated working with a director who is able to creatively contribute to the content of the film rather than just its appearance.”

Gender Mainstreaming Specialist
Canvas Africa Productions did an excellent and value-for-money job, producing a 15-minute video documentary, ‘Power of Mothers’. The filming was added at the last minute to other commissioned work, and the budget only allowed for 1 day of filming in a rural community. Canvas Africa Productions used the draft outline to develop the story line for editing, and the final product is a warm and human presentation that now provides us with a strong advocacy tool for our work. I am doubly impressed with the final product given that our discussions about the purpose, content and editing of the documentary were all conducted on email.
Giulio D'Ercole provided valuable video services to the World Bank/FAO/ILRI Gates-funded project on" Livestock Data Innovation in Africa". He comes highly recommended by the project coordinators.
FAO-World Bank Liaison Officer
"When it comes to portraying humanitarian development work in the field, Giulio is a superb photographer and videographer without question. He knows how to capture fabulous scenes in all kinds of difficult situations and conditions and does it with the appropriate cultural sensitivity required. Giulio's magnetic and friendly personality allowed him to warm up quickly with several major donors we hosted on a Malawi trip. That added personal warmth gave the donors an enriching experience and insight to cbm's work with people that genuinely care about good development. Giulio was able to quickly edit the material and information he gathered daily into our ideal communication messages. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Giulio for future assignments and work."
Director of International Programs, cbm Canada
"Working with Giulio D’Ercole and his team at Canvas Africa Productions has been a very positive and fruitful experience. We wanted to have a video that would allow us to put across a number of complex messages and explanations within a relatively short format. I was impressed by the immediate deep understanding of these messages and the commitment demonstrated by Canvas to convey them in a clear, efficient as well as elegant manner. The production team was quick, very professional and quality-oriented. We are very happy with the end product. It was one of the smoothest video production experiences that I have had. I look forward to further collaboration opportunities in the future.”
Former cbm Emergency Communications Coordinator
Canvas Africa Productions was contracted by CBM East Africa Regional Office for two projects in 2012, a video documentary and a photography project. On both occasions, Canvas Africa conducted themselves with a high degree of professionalism. Projects were completed on budget, on time and having accomplished agreed upon objectives. Adequate time was given to preparation and communication ensuring a smooth production and post production process. It was indeed a pleasure to work with Giulio and his team.
Former Communications Manager, cbm Kenya
Thanks for sharing the excellent video today. It will serve as an excellent resource for us both as a report back to donors, and our awareness, and capacity building work with other Canadian Intl. development organizations on D&ID.
The film is brilliant and certainly helpful for future fundraising. I would like to present it to the CBM team Switzerland to show what has been done in Kenya. Especially for our staff, which cannot travel, it is difficult to imagine what really is done in the field. I´m looking forward to the future collaboration with the ERU.
It´s a fantastic video. It shows what we are working for!
Nearly all MA´s ordered at least one copy of the video! In addition to this presentation we also did two video sessions at IO, in which we showed the video to the staff at IO and CBM-Germany. An again we got very positive feedback. So, thank you for the fantastic work you have done!!!

Using stills and footage Canvas Africa produced highly professional and polished short films capturing all the NRC activities. The DVD forms a powerful and important communication tool that will be used by NRC for feedback to the donors, fund raising as well as advocacy. NRC was fully satisfied by the way Giulio D’Ercole professionally organized and carried on the whole process.

It is our pleasure to recommend Mr. D'Ercole. The decision that he took to organize a succession of interviews (and no off-voice) did correspond perfectly with the kind of work done by ICRC in Uganda.

Canvas Africa's production was excellent. They followed our specifications to the letter and gave us what we needed, and then they went beyond that and gave us footage that was very creative and compelling.
