Giulio D'Ercole - Canvas Africa Productions
Photojournalist and Documentary Director Producer
Giulio D'Ercole: Photographer and Writer Director Producer for Documentaries and Multimedia Productions
I was born in Rome, Italy in February 1961.... and I am a true Aquarius.
My first experience in Media and Communication was at the age of sixteen, when I collaborated with one of the many new private Radio stations in Rome. Then, after graduating in Literature, I worked as a producer for a theatre company, managing a small theatre in Siena and organizing few plays in Rome.
In 1988 I began working in TV, at TeleMonteCarlo, today called La7. From being a Promo producer for the broadcasting channel, I became writer producer for TV programs.
In 1997 I resigned from TMC and left for New York, where I was hired as Senior Producer by RAI Corporation. In such a role I produced a very large number of shows of different nature and formats: talk shows, news, international events, documentaries, including the production of more than 300 daily reports after the World Trade Center attack on September 11.
From 2001 to 2003 I then worked with Global Vision (Rory O'Connor and Danny Schechter) and Rossellini&Associates (Gil Rossellini) on social documentaries focusing on education for children, human trafficking, and the upcoming war on terror.
Finally, at the end of 2003 I left New York and moved to Kenya, where I founded Canvas Africa Productions a media company focusing on social and humanitarian issues. Through my work as documentary film maker and photographer I witnessed and documented major UN Agencies' and INGOs' projects in the whole of Eastern Africa and beyond, capturing on stills and videos the impact of development projects on people and their society.
Even though I started shooting photos decades ago, it has been in Africa that I fully developed my photography skills. That is why most part of my archive is made of shots taken in Africa.
Still keeping my company Canvas Africa Productions active in Kenya, I recently moved back to Rome, my hometown in Italy, and I am now operating as a free lance photographer and film maker wherever there is need of my services or wherever my eye, my brain and my soul will take me, involving myself with commercial and social photography and multimedia communication projects.
I successfully exhibited my work internationally (Kenya, Nigeria, Biennale di Venezia) while my documentaries have been largely being published and distributed by humanitarian organizations.
